Which one stands out on paper
The White German Shepherd is a rear color variant of the German Shepherd. As such it might be a little difficult finding reputable breeders and quite easy finding puppy mills. The breeders above each have good breeding practices which should be commended. That said, my pick from the litter would be ASJ White Shepherds, located in Middletown Connecticut.
The reasons for singling out them are quite simple. The first would be their breeding program which is quite experienced with over 10 years of breeding good quality white German Shepherd puppies. Their puppies are carefully selected after much research would have been done and that is impressive. Also, genetic and orthopedic health testing is something to assure confidence in their program.
When it comes to their socialization program. It seems pretty decent as they raise the puppies as family dogs where they are handled, loved, and cared for by all members of the family. All in all, they seem to show good faith in their program.

What the breed standard actually says about colour
Most of the confusion about German Shepherd colours, and nearly all of the pricing built on it, disappears once you read the two relevant sentences of the official standard. They are short.
On colour: “The German Shepherd Dog varies in color, and most colors are permissible. Strong rich colors are preferred. Pale, washed-out colors and blues or livers are serious faults. A white dog must be disqualified.” (Official Standard of the German Shepherd Dog, American Kennel Club, approved 1978-02-11, reformatted 1994-07-11, retrieved 2026-08-13).
And the full disqualification list, which is worth seeing because it is shorter than people expect: “Cropped or hanging ears. Dogs with noses not predominantly black. Undershot jaw. Docked tail. White dogs. Any dog that attempts to bite the judge.” (same source, retrieved 2026-08-13).
Three things follow, and they are the useful part.
1. “Rare” is not a compliment in this breed. Blue and liver are named as serious faults; white is the single colour that disqualifies. So a price premium for those colours is charging more for what the standard treats as less. That is a marketing position, not a breeding achievement.
2. Colour is a show-ring judgement, not a health or temperament one. Nothing in the standard’s colour section says a faulted or disqualified colour is an unhealthy or badly tempered dog. A white German Shepherd cannot be shown in AKC conformation. It can be a completely sound pet.
3. The standard is the same document breeders quote selectively. It was approved in 1978 and reformatted in 1994; it is short, public and free to read. If a breeder tells you a colour is “to standard”, you can check in about two minutes.
The one place colour genetics genuinely touches health
Colour by itself is not a health trait. There is one mechanism worth understanding, because it is the reason dilute colours attract more scrutiny than the rest.
Blue and liver are dilutions. They are not separate pigments but the ordinary black and tan pigment, produced in a diluted form because of a recessive gene. That is also why the standard groups them with “pale, washed-out colors” rather than treating them as distinct colours.
In some dilute dogs that same genetics is associated with a skin condition. VCA describes colour dilution alopecia as “a genetic, recessive, inherited condition that causes patches of hair thinning or loss and may also include flaky and/or itchy skin”, appearing in dogs with a “blue or fawn coat”. Affected puppies “are born with a normal-looking hair coat, and the clinical signs of CDA may begin to manifest at six months of age or older” (VCA Animal Hospitals, retrieved 2026-08-13).
Read that carefully, because the honest version is narrower than the internet version. The breeds VCA lists as over-represented are Dobermans, Chow Chows, Dachshunds, Great Danes, Irish Setters, Italian Greyhounds, Standard Poodles and others; the German Shepherd is not among them. So this is not a prediction that a blue Shepherd will develop it. It is the reason to ask a breeder of dilute dogs whether anything of the kind has appeared in their lines, and to know what you are looking at if a coat starts thinning after six months.
VCA is clear on both the outlook and the breeding implication: “While CDA is not curable, it is straightforward to manage”, and “dogs with CDA, their parents, and their siblings should not be used in breeding programs” (retrieved 2026-08-13).
Everything else about a dilute dog, its joints, its temperament, its lifespan, is governed by the same things as any other German Shepherd.
What to ask about instead of colour
If you are choosing a white German Shepherd puppy, the colour is the least consequential decision you will make. These are the ones that matter, and each produces a document.
- Hip and elbow grades on both parents. The OFA scale runs Excellent, Good, Fair, Borderline, Mild, Moderate, Severe (OFA, retrieved 2026-08-11). Ask which grade, not whether they are “clear”.
- Degenerative myelopathy (SOD1) status. Breeding two carriers is predicted to produce 25% of puppies with two copies (OFA, retrieved 2026-08-12), and carriers look perfectly healthy.
- Temperament of the parents, which you can only assess by meeting them.
- What the breeder does in the first eight weeks. Early handling and habituation shape the adult dog more than any colour gene.
The reason to weight it this way is what the breed is actually treated for. A VetCompass study of 12,146 German Shepherds found the most common causes of death were “musculoskeletal disorder (16.3%), inability to stand (14.9%), neoplasia (14.5%) and spinal cord disorder (13.6%)” (O’Neill DG, Coulson NR, Church DB, Brodbelt DC, “Demography and disorders of German Shepherd Dogs under primary veterinary care in the UK”, Canine Genetics and Epidemiology 2017;4:7, retrieved 2026-08-13). Roughly 45% of those deaths relate to the dog losing the use of its back end. No coat colour affects that. Hips, elbows and DM do.

Where that leaves a white German Shepherd
White is the one colour on the disqualification list, so a white dog cannot be shown in AKC conformation. That is the whole of what the disqualification means.
It is not a statement about health, and it is not a statement about whether the dog is a German Shepherd. A white puppy from two registered German Shepherd parents is a German Shepherd, and is registrable; it simply cannot compete in the ring. Separate registries and clubs exist for white Shepherds precisely because of that history.
The practical consequence for a buyer is narrow. Ask the same health questions you would ask about any Shepherd, and be sceptical of a premium charged for the colour, in either direction.
